Important Security Disclaimers
Please read this carefully before using TheScanQR. This disclaimer explains the limitations of our QR code scanner and important security considerations you should understand.
TheScanQR is an Inspection Tool, Not a Security Guarantee
TheScanQR helps you inspect QR codes before opening their destinations, but it cannot guarantee that any QR code or website is safe. Our tool provides basic checks that can identify common warning signs, but sophisticated attacks often use legitimate-looking websites that would pass these checks.
What Our Security Checks Cannot Detect
Our automated checks have significant limitations and cannot protect against:
- Legitimate-looking malicious websites that use proper HTTPS certificates and appear trustworthy
- Social engineering attacks that mimic real companies or services
- Phishing sites that use valid domains and convincing designs
- Malware downloads hosted on otherwise legitimate websites
- Business email compromise scams that use official-looking domains
- Advanced persistent threats or targeted attacks
HTTPS Does Not Equal Safety
A green padlock or HTTPS certificate only means the connection is encrypted. It does not mean the website is legitimate, trustworthy, or safe to use. Many malicious websites use valid HTTPS certificates.
What You Should Do
For your safety, always:
- Verify unexpected QR codes independently through official channels
- Be suspicious of urgent requests for payments, login credentials, or personal information
- Check the actual domain carefully — attackers often use slight misspellings or similar-looking domains
- Never enter sensitive information unless you're certain of a website's legitimacy
- Contact organizations directly if you receive unexpected QR codes claiming to be from banks, delivery services, employers, or government agencies
Common QR Code Scam Types
Be especially careful with QR codes that:
- Appear on public surfaces (parking meters, restaurant tables) where they could have been placed by attackers
- Arrive in unexpected emails or text messages
- Promise prizes, discounts, or urgent account actions
- Request immediate payment or login credentials
- Lead to domains that don't match the expected organization
No Malware Detection
TheScanQR is not antivirus software and does not detect malware, viruses, or other malicious software. We only inspect URLs and provide basic pattern matching for common warning signs.
Use at Your Own Risk
By using TheScanQR, you acknowledge that:
- You use the tool at your own risk and discretion
- We provide no warranties or guarantees about security
- You are responsible for verifying the legitimacy of QR code destinations
- We are not liable for any damages resulting from your use of scanned QR codes
When in Doubt, Don't Proceed
If anything about a QR code seems suspicious, unexpected, or too good to be true, don't open it. Contact the supposed sender through an official, verified channel instead.
