Short, practical guides for checking QR codes before you follow their links.

GUIDE 01

How to scan a QR code from a screenshot

Can't point your camera at your own screen? Upload the screenshot or saved photo to scan QR and see the decoded destination before you open it. Works on iPhone, Android, and desktop.

How to recognise a suspicious QR link

Read the actual hostname, not just brand names in the rest of the link. Be careful with raw IP addresses, URL shorteners, unexpected downloads, password requests, and links that create urgency. HTTPS is useful, but it does not prove a website is trustworthy.

Camera scanning versus image upload

Use the live camera for printed codes or codes on another device. Use image upload for a saved photo, a social-media post, or a QR code shown on your own screen. Both methods decode locally, so the QR image is not uploaded to scan QR servers.

How to scan a QR code from an image safely

A QR code can contain a website address, plain text, contact information, Wi-Fi details, or another short instruction. The pattern itself does not tell you whether the destination deserves your trust. scan QR is a free browser-based tool that decodes the image first, displays the exact content, and gives you time to inspect it before anything opens. If you want to scan QR by image free without installing an app, choose an existing JPG, PNG, or WebP file from your phone or computer. The image is processed inside your browser, so it is not uploaded to our server. See the FAQ for common questions.

Scan QR from an uploaded image

To scan QR from image free, select Upload Image and choose a saved screenshot, photograph, or downloaded QR code. Desktop users can also drag the file into the scanner. The decoder looks for the square QR pattern and reads its payload. A sharp, straight image with good contrast gives the best result, but the scanner also attempts to read inverted colors. Files must be an image and no larger than 10 MB. If no code is found, crop away unnecessary background, increase the image size, or try a clearer copy. You never need to type the destination manually.

Use the camera on phones and computers

Select Use Camera to scan QR codes in real time. On a phone, the scanner requests the rear camera when the browser makes it available. On a laptop or desktop, it uses an available webcam. Hold the code inside the guide, keep the device steady, and use even lighting without glare. Camera access only starts after your permission and stops after a successful scan, when you press Stop Camera, when you reset the tool, or when you leave the page. If live access is unavailable or denied, you can still take a photo and use the scan QR upload image option.

What the QR safety result means

After decoding, the tool parses web addresses and checks several common warning signs locally. It warns when a destination does not use HTTPS, contains hidden username or password information, uses a raw IP address, includes an encoded international domain, relies on a familiar URL shortener, or uses a potentially unsafe protocol such as JavaScript or data. These checks can reveal suspicious construction, but they cannot prove that every clean-looking website is legitimate. No obvious risks found means only that the address passed the checks shown on the page. Treat unexpected payment, password, download, and sign-in requests with extra care.

A preview that does not visit the destination

The destination preview separates the protocol, hostname, path, and query parameters so the important parts of a long link are easier to read. The hostname is the organization or server you would actually visit; words elsewhere in the path do not change it. For example, a link can mention a trusted brand in its path while belonging to an unrelated domain. The preview is generated from the decoded text and does not load the remote website. This avoids blank embedded pages, prevents the destination from receiving a visit during inspection, and keeps you in control until you deliberately select Open destination.

Why scan a saved QR image?

Many QR codes appear on the same phone you are using: in an email, social post, digital ticket, message, PDF, or screenshot. Pointing the phones camera at its own screen is impossible, so uploading the saved image is the practical answer. A free scan QR image tool is also useful when someone sends you a code and you want to inspect it without opening the link in a messaging app. On Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android, the workflow is the same: save or screenshot the code, upload it here, review the decoded destination, and decide what to do.

Is this an AI QR scanner?

People sometimes search for scan QR from image AI, but QR decoding does not require artificial intelligence. QR codes follow a defined visual format, and a dedicated decoder is faster, more predictable, and more private than sending the picture to a general AI service. This tool uses browser image processing and QR-decoding logic, then applies understandable URL checks. It does not claim that an opaque AI model can guarantee safety. The result explains what was found, allowing you to verify the real domain and make a better decision rather than relying on an unexplained score.

Practical checks before opening any QR link

Read the hostname carefully from right to left and watch for misspellings, extra words, or unfamiliar endings. HTTPS protects the connection but does not prove that the owner is trustworthy. Be suspicious if a QR code creates urgency, promises a prize, requests a payment, asks for a one-time code, or leads directly to a download. When the code supposedly comes from a bank, delivery company, restaurant, parking provider, or employer, compare the domain with the organizations official website. If anything feels wrong, close the result and contact the organization through a known channel instead.

QR code scanner online without an app

Using a QR code scanner online means you can check a code without creating an account, paying for a subscription, or installing software. Unlike a dedicated QR code scanner app, scan QR works directly in a modern browser on phones and computers. The QR code scanner from image workflow processes a saved screenshot or photo locally, and the destination is not contacted while the preview is created. The tool remains a first inspection step rather than antivirus software or a reputation database. For the safest workflow, combine the decoded information with your browsers security warnings, updated device software, and your knowledge of where the QR code came from.
